Flying High at Bleach*

About

A Sunday on the beach of artful kite-flying and suitcase rummaging.

Bleach* & Kirra Kite Festival join forces to set the skies of Kirra awash with colour and movement.

Flying High is a free outdoor event celebrating the art of kite flying, featuring displays from the Queensland Kite Flyers, legendary Kite Artist Tony Rice and the dazzling Strange Fruit.

Beachology is back! The highly popular Gold Coast program is back to amaze and engage kids in hands-on kids marine ecology workshops where they can explore and learn about the dynamic marine environment on Gold Coast beaches. Great for budding scientists or just a fun way to learn about the animals that live in our sea-shore. Plus it’s a FREE workshop and is limited by numbers.

Workshops are run by Griffith University’s Centre for Coastal Management with highly qualified Marine Biologists & Scientists to help make the workshops educational as well as fun! Workshop activities include:

  • Coastal exploration - lets find out what’s living down on the beach & where it fits into the ecosystem
  • Sorting & classifying marine organisms - find out amazing facts like where sea-shells come from and why sea urchins have metal in their teeth!
  • Sampling for marine worms & crustaceans in the shoreline (you’ll get wet here) - then check them out in all their detail under the beach microscopes!
  • Learn how to use real scientific equipment
  • Sand displays - find out how our beaches were formed & what they’re made of
  • Dune displays - Learn about the plants and insects of the local sand dunes. Learn about the Beach Care program & how you can keep our dunes beautiful & healthy
  • Mystery Box - guesss the mystery hidden marine creature in the box
  • Full certificates and handbooks for all participants

Workshops are aimed at 5 - 11 years old & run for about 1.5 hours and we love parent participation to make it a whole family experience!

Workshops numbers are strictly limited but we’re running all day so get down to Flying High at Bleach* to make sure you get a spot, we can’t wait to see you there! 4 Beachology Workshops will run on Sun 24 February, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm at Roughton Park Kirra
