VANESSA TOMLINSON | LAWRENCE ENGLISH - Presented by BLEACH* and Griffith University
Gather at North Burleigh Headland to experience a sonic meditation on the fluid boundaries of coastal space and responding to the headland.
Led by percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson and sound artist Lawrence English, Beacons is a joint composition bringing together leading Brisbane musicians collaborating with musicians from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University on the rockface. Hear trombones, trumpets, saxophones and a giant tamtam, with speakers scattered across the headland, as they carve sound into the air. Discover new understandings of space and place through dynamic vibration and deep listening. This site-specific, place-led work pushes beyond the spectacular visual vista of the coast, offering a sounding of little Burleigh Heads.
“ROBUST, STEADY, IT’S AN AURAL METAMORPHOSIS”
– Toneshift
Lawrence English is composer, artist and curator based in Australia. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English’s work prompts questions of field, perception and memory. He investigates the politics of perception, through live performance and installation, to create works that ponder subtle transformations of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.
Vanessa is an artist dedicated to exploring how sound shapes our lives. With a long history in experimental music, Vanessa uses this body of knowledge to consider how we listen through site-specific explorations of space and place, and our potential to explore new ideas through sound. Trained as a percussionist, Vanessa relies on this sonic investigation of objects to build compositions, create contexts for improvisation, and collaborate across art-forms and disciplines. She has toured the world for 25 years, premiering over 100 works by significant national and international composers, presenting work at major international festivals, and collaborating with improvisers, dancers, artists and more.
