KARUL PROJECTS
Presented by BLEACH*
Meander along the Burleigh Esplanade where six visionary artists orchestrate their own performance piece under the guidance of Karul Projects, champions of First Nations voices.
Each installation, positioned along the path snaking up to the north, serves as its own vibrant chapter, woven seamlessly into a singular storyline. Be guided by the pulse of performance, traversing the artistic landscape, which culminates at the festival hub – a nexus of creativity and culture.
Started by Thomas E.S. Kelly and Taree Sansbury in 2017, Karul Projects is a performing arts company with a focus to increase First Nations’ voices, visibilities and stories locally, nationally and internationally.
Karul is a Yugambeh Language word which means ‘Everything’. Named so because Karul will do everything it can to strengthen and empower the cultural knowledge of this land so future generations continue to be proud and learn from Australia’s rich First Nations’ heritage.
Additionally, ‘Karul’ represents our works. Alongside our grounding medium of dance we also use Karul/Everything that we feel best suits the story and information we are sharing incorporating theatre, film, projection, animation, singing and more.
The work contains both visual and audio/sound content. The sound will be experienced via headphones that will be provided to audience members.
The work requires audience members to travel along the Burleigh Esplanade to visit several performance locations along (or near to) the concrete Oceanway path. Audience will be guided through this experience in a group. The work is likely to be able to be fully experienced by those using a wheelchair. Audience members who will be walking should expect to be on their feet for approx. 45 - 60mins.
The full BLEACH* Access program will be released on Wednesday 17 June. Check back or visit our socials on this date for more information about Accessibility offerings at BLEACH* Festival 2024.
